Up to now web browsers were only used to search for information on the Internet and show it. But now they have become something like operating systems which can give you almost everything that you have on your own PC desktop.
Cloud computing can also be cheaper than buying expensive software. Many basic applications on the net are free, but you may have to pay to use some of the more complex programs. Companies do not have to buy expensive software licenses for all their workers and computers do not have to be better and more powerful all the time because all you need is a simple web browser, like the Internet Explorer and Firefox.
Cloud computing allows people from different parts of the world to work on a project together. Teachers and pupils, for example, might work on the same text together. Companies around the world can work together on a single computer and do not have to send data back and forth.
There are, however, some things that make computer users sceptical. One of the big problems is security. With cloud computing, you give your data to someone else. Users are also worried that they might lose their data on other computers. In any case, cloud computing is marching forward and in a few years, we may only be having a web browser running on our PCs.

The New Google Earth
With the new release of Google Earth learning about our planet has become a lot more interesting and fun too. The program is a free web-based application that creates a virtual Earth from satellite pictures of every part of the globe. Users can zoom in on city blocks, rainforests or even motorways. The first version of Google Earth was released in 2005. In the past years, it has been downloaded about 500 million times.
In earlier versions of the software, users were only able to view the surface of our planet. Water was seen upon as only a dull blue surface. Google Earth 5.0 changes that.
During two years of hard work, Google’s developers have improved the program. Now it is possible to explore the oceans and the sky. It even includes a globe of the planet Mars. The company has also added other content like videos, photos and audio clips.
The content covers a wide range of topics. If you click on Hawaii, for example, you cannot only see satellite images of the islands but also learn about humpback whales. Clicking on a part of the Atlantic Ocean will bring forth images and videos of sunken ships like the Titanic.
With this content, Google wants to show us how important it is to understand the world’s ocean and how we are connected with them.

Automakers Produce Cars of the Future
Automakers around the world are planning to make cars that are smaller, use up less fuel and do not damage our environment. At auto shows around the globe, car producers are presenting what they have in mind.
General Motors has already shown one of its prototypes. It is called P.U.M.A., which means Personal Urban Mobility and Accessibility vehicle. It looks like a cart, has two batteries and seats for two people.
While GM’s car may never be produced other carmakers have already made mini-cars that you can buy. Mercedes’ Smart car has been popular in Europe for some time. Chrysler’s GEM Peapod and Toyota’s IQ are two small cars that have been specially designed for city traffic.
Man people want to buy small cars because they save fuel. That means saving money on petrol plus being able to find parking spaces more easily in crowded cities.
Carmakers are also spending money on research to make alternative-fuel cars. Maybe one day, most of us will drive biodiesel, hydrogen, or solar-powered cars.
Hybrids are cars that are already on the market today. Toyota and GM already produce hybrid cars, trucks and SUV’s that run on petrol and electricity. Other companies, like BMW, have made cars that use hydrogen and electricity. Although such cars are still too expensive to produce in great numbers carmakers are continuing to improve them and make them cheaper.
